“New York communicates in your face”

Guest column by Irene Vermeulen, owner of About Brands Concepts Design

“I advice companies about living, from trends to brands and assortments. I prefer handmade, sustainable products from developing countries. And I love to travel. In every country I visit, I see that Urban Graphic Design strongly influences the image of a city. Graphic symbols often offer an interesting mix of public, commercial and personal communication. They are visual landmarks that intensify your memories of a city. The streets of New York are my favourite. I try to visit the Big Apple every year or two. Simone de Beauvoir once said: ‘There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless. Perhaps it is that the heart beats faster here than elsewhere.’ The city has a real buzz, is full of activity and creativity. And the streets clearly differ from European streets. The scale, the experience and heat of the city and the constant aura of change…New York communicates in your face.
