1. Background

I was born and raised in Amsterdam Bos en Lommer. I graduated as an artist at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. I have spent almost all of my life in Amsterdam, except, for two periods of one and a half year in New York. For the past 8 years, I have been a partner at PrastHooft architects, soon operating under the name & p r a s t & h o o f t.
I write articles in the daily paper het Parool and I am the presenter for the Dutch TV program Architecturen for that airs on AVRO.

2. Why are you fascinated with
architecture / urban development?

Actually I prefer Nature over Culture, but unfortunately I know less of it.

3. Best city

Barcelona. It is like Amsterdam except there is a beach.

4. Most beautiful building

The Taj Mahal in Agra, North India.

5. Most beautiful park or square

South park.

6. Best public facility / urban infill

The parks in Paris with the free standing chairs. In Amsterdam, these chairs would disappear over the week-end and end-up in private backyards and balconies.

7. Best 20th and 21st century innovations

The industrial revolution: A job for everyone. And the information revolution: A smartphone for everyone.

8. Next groundbreaking innovation

The mobility revolution: Everyone cosy at home (because of the traffic jams …).

9. About the future of cities

Cities will have to shrink to guarantee operating viability and social cohesion. Cities of 500,000 people maximum, with a scale that allows everyone easily to get to their destination either by bike or by foot.

10. Personal contribution to urban development

I write a weekly article on this subject.

11. Guerrilla in the city?

That sounds like Tanja Nijmeijer in the P.C. Hooftstraat…
